Let’s Encrypt: Free DV SSL Certificates
Following Google’s announcement that they will be marking sites not using SSL as “non-secure”, you may have started to worry about the cost and implementation of SSL for your website. Worry not! Let’s Encrypt is a global Certificate Authority that offers Domain Validated SSL certificates… for free!
There’s actually a good chance your web server already has a Let’s Encrypt DV SSL certificate installed. Most hosting comes with a Let’s Encrypt certificate pre-installed and ready to go.
Why is it free?
According to the Let’s Encrypt FAQs page: “Let’s Encrypt is a nonprofit, our mission is to create a more secure and privacy-respecting Web by promoting the widespread adoption of HTTPS. Our services are free and easy to use so that every website can deploy HTTPS.”
In a nutshell, Let’s Encrypt want to see a more secure web, and are trying to make that a reality by providing free, easy to use SSL certificates. The type of certificate provided (Domain Validated), has the same levels of encryption as any of the other types of SSL certificates, and is in no way inferior.
Is this free certificate for me?
The Let’s Encrypt DV SSL certificate is perfect for most small businesses that have a basic website and do not collect sensitive user data such as credit card information.
This certificate will be fine for your site even if you have an online store, so long as you are using a payment gateway such as PayFast, since users are directed away from your site and the payment gateway you use should have its own SSL certificate.
SSL is important for many reasons, and Let’s Encrypt has given small business owners the chance to get their site running HTTPS with zero financial burden, and minimal effort.
